On Saturday 20th June, 2009, a 122,000 tonne, 317 metre long, £700 million cruise ship gingerly edged its way through a tiny gap in the river bank as it left its shipping yard in Germany for the first time.
The conveyance (as its officially known) is a rite of passage for all ships. The entrance to the docks is less than 40 feet (12 metres) wide which, at its narrowest point, meant there was less than 10 feet (3 metres) between the ship and the bank on each side. The maneuver is so delicate that the slightest change in the weather or the tides meant the ship would not have sailed for risk of causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Beautiful ship! Can't wait to see you in March!

I think you meant the entrance was 40 meters wide, not 40 feet as you said in your comments
