how long does it take to go through the entire canal? i know there are 3 locks and this seemed to take a while to go through part of one :P

@ninamarie222 Because of the diferent height of levels of the waters. Ocean level is lower than the water of the lake.

@ninamarie222 Because the lake to cross panama that is used to cross panama is higher than sea level. But also, because of tides, the Pacific ocean has a different level than the Caribbean at any given time. The locks isolate the two seas and allow ships to use the man-made lake to cross Panama.
