http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Asking-Bill-Gulliford-to-STOP-dangerous-cuts... Wasting $13 million to save $4 million? Is this how we want to run city government?

Here are the facts. Over the last two years Sheriff Rutherford has cut over 11 million dollars from his budget. While the poli...ce were cutting 11 million dollars the city council was busy GIVING AWAY TAXPAYER DOLLARS to non-government special interest.

In an August meeting the Jacksonville City Council Finance Committee "sprung" a last minute "surprise" $4 million cut on top of the $11 million already cut from police.

According to the Sheriff this last minute "surprise" $4 million cut on top of the $11 million already cut will result in a 2% pay cut and/or firing as many as 130 Officers.

Depending on which politician is speaking at the time they tell us that to hire and train a new Police Officer it cost the city $100,000.00 to $150,000.00. So if we fire 130 Officers to save $4 million then we just destroyed $13 million (net value in human assets) to save $4,000,000 (net value in cash) ... to spend on non-government special interest else where???

When it cost over $13 million to save $4 million a good businessperson won't go $9 million in the hole to save $4 million. I can only hope that the City Council Finance Committee consult some business people and not make this blunder.

In order to better understand what was going on between the City of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Police budget process I contacted The Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice, James P. Lynch is the director.

Now look at where JSO stands to see if we need to cut police officers according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Here is a sampling of police departments, by number of full-time sworn personnel per 100,000 in population.

CITY Officers Per 100,000 residents

Jacksonville-Duval Co. (FL) 205
Miami (FL) 256
Tampa (FL) 288
Atlanta (GA) 320
Cincinnati (OH) 325
Newark (NJ) 472
New Orleans (LA) 423
Cleveland (OH) 372
Baltimore (MD) 469
Washington (DC) 634
Philadelphia (PA) 430
Chicago (IL) 472
New York (NY) 432

Considering the comparable cities cited above Jacksonville is the most UNDERSTAFFED police agency per capita.

Now lets look at Pay. This is average pay for agencies.
Police Officer in Jacksonville, FL $41,000
Police Officer in Tampa, FL $43,000
Police Officer in Miami, FL $46,000
Police Officer in New York, NY $60,000
Police Officer in Orlando, FL $43,000
Police Officer in Tallahassee, FL $43,000
Police Officer in Chicago, IL $50,000
Police Officer in Atlanta, GA $50,000
Police Officer in Cincinnati, OH $42,000
Police Officer in Newark, NJ $59,000
Police Officer in Baltimore, MD $48,000
Police Officer in Washington, DC $54,000
Police Officer in Philadelphia, PA $44,000

As you can see from cites cited Jacksonville police are substantially underpaid.

The $41,000 Average Police Officer salaries in Jacksonville, FL are 14% lower than average Police Officer salaries for job postings nationwide. To further cut Jacksonville Police pay to waste the money on non-government special interest is wrong.

Now lets look at what the police do. Every year the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office answers over 1 million calls for police service. That is 2,739 calls every day. That is 114 calls every hour. That is a call for police service every 37 seconds. WITH 130 POLICE LAID OFF BY THE CITY COUNCIL and a call for help coming in every 37 seconds from a citizen in distress what will we do when we get behind and how will we catch up?

Please call the members of the City Council Finance Committee and ask them to refrain from this reckless cut in public safety.
