Located on Central Park West and 79th Street, The American Museum of Natural History is a renowned landmark in Manhattan. Check out their fossil exhibitions with the famous dinosaurs, the Hall of Ocean Life with a 94 foot whale suspended from the ceiling, or Hayden Planetarium for an incredible show. With 46 permanent halls and many new exhibitions, there is always something to see here. Go to their website for more information at www.amnh.org. CityPass is available at the Museum of Natural History. It includes entry to the museum and Hayden Planetarium. Check out their website at www.citypass.com.

Yes I know exactly which diorama you are referring to. It's on the 1st level behind the whale I think. You're right it was dark and creepy, the long tentacles and everything. But the blue whale replica is what freaked me out the most, all I kept thinking was "I hope they have that thing fastened up there securely!"

  • @sdegroot1 --Your reply cracked me up! Too funny, but sadly, I must agree.

Anyway, you know that diorama they have in that marine life room (yep, the one w/ the whale on the ceiling we were just talking about), well my sister and I have also been terrified of the one depicting a giant squid wrapping itself around the head and mouth of the sperm whale. It's so dark and sinister, so very scary to me (and sis). but I ALWAYS look at it each time I'm there. Morbid fascination, I guess!

I remember the first time I walked underneath the whale and looked up...bout crapped my pants. lol Gave me vertigo and everything.

  • This is where the first night at the museum was filmed. The second one was at the Smithsonian.

  • I want to go there but nobody wants to go with me!

  • hmmm is thata diplodicous as you walk in because we have one in our entrance
