One of my favorite moments from the series. Sting plays a beautiful rendition of Fields of Gold on the lute while Matt and Harriet talk. The brilliant production of poignant scenes such as these can nearly be considered Sorkin's MO. While this made the West Wing wildly popular, romanticizing Hollywood failed to appeal to as large of an audience. IIn my opinion the canceling of the show was yet another example of a major TV network investing in quantity over quality--pulling in a lot of ad money as quickly as possible with no thought to long-term viewer loyalty or their own reputation. Sorkin's frank discussion of these same issues through "Studio 60" surely contributed to its unfortunate demise.

I'm from one of those *certain states* And me and my friends loved the show, watched every episode, bought the DVD. Pretty much love everything Sorkin ever did. NBC is terrible at marketing and the show got killed by a terrible similar theme show *30 rock or whatever its called* West Wing was just as *smart* and did well for years. Until NBC gets better at marketing new shows they will continue to die. Kings met a similar fate.
This was the best written, acted, directed and any other category you want to mention show on TV. Why it got canceled, I don't know. Other than NBC is an idiot.........
The reason it got canceled was because of bad ratings. Those bad ratings came from certain states in the US, which are also at the top of the list in illiteracy in the US. As you know, this show is very intelligent, very witty, and the timing of the dialogue is sensational. You actually have to be somewhat intelligent to follow along. So basically, the average American is too stupid to understand the show, therefore the ratings were bad, therefore the show got canceled. Yay for Americans
good to know there are some others like me that miss this show. And i agree, there is so much crap in tv and good shows get cancelled. i live on argentina, i know i havent vote, but at least at critics, pleased, hear us!
I loved this show. I waited for it each week. I was crushed when it was cancelled. There is so much crap on TV now. I hate that shows like the Hills can go on while real, talented actors and writers have to have their show cancelled.
Good insight in your commentary. It may be pointed out that this was, while it was on, the most expensive show on TV. It was also the largest set as well. Did the actors know Chenoweth & Sorkin were Immortalized via these scripts? And the plotline on the young writer presenting "Nations" as a hat tip to the beginnings of "West Wing" right through the resistance of the network? This is the finest show that has ever been on tv, & perhaps why we haven't seen Matt or Brad for so long, in mourning.
