this is the first of a series of tests we are making in moviepeople with digital cameras. In thie episode we tested the actual framing, the sensitivity and the resolution of our brand new Arri Alexa, our newly upgraded Red One Misterium X and one of our "workhorses", the Red One camera.

  • Great that you guys took the time to do this! it was interesting but as others have said here some of the tests do not show anything that would be applicable to the real world.

    Comparing the Alexa in LOG Space showing Milky Blacks (blacks lifted), to the Red in lin Space with the blacks closer to 0 is not fare. You really should convert the Elexa Footage to lin space and then bring all blacks down to 0.

    If you need help doing this let me know, I know how to deal with this footage.

    you are absolutely right!

    this test is not about what looks best, is about what is best.

    everybody complains that red images look better, but every pro knows that log-c images have more informations that could lead to a better finalization.

    to me, log-c has a clear advantage, and it's more important to see that all colors are there, before worrying for the milky blacks.

    besides, red has a much much greater definition...

  • unfortunately i don't have the raw files anymore to check the resolution with the "alexa up-rezzed."

    alexa has improved a lot during these last few months.

    on january 5 we have a new test session with alexas and reds. i'll do some testing on the topic by then and post it.

  • Why didnt you compare M-X at 800ASA instead of 320?

    Also why you didnt put 3dlut on the LOG-C material?

    Why didnt you use REDlog gamma for some comparison shots?

    This test shows nothing...

    for sure your objections are reasonable. there could be thousands more tests to do.

    but there are several ways to ask and tell. some are just more polite than others.

    so if you like us to perform a test following your suggestions, no problem.

    if you're just telling us that you read the book and our test sucks, please be our guest and show us how you can do better.

  • ARRI Alexa is using a flat image , different ISO and different scale/zoom.

    Is like comparing a light shot with a night shot and try to convince someone.

    Are you trying to promote RED?

  • FAKEEEE! I saw a real comparison between the ALEXA and an ARRICAM Studio and there is no big diference. The ALEXA is the Film Camera of the year. RED sucks.........

  • But yes still non of these compare to the resolution that is achievable with 35mm film. and especially not 65mm uuuuggghhh

  • An interesting Test, Although some of the info isn't really real world applied I feel but the Log-C is amazing. We just got done using the Alexa on a Java soft shoot and its latitude in the Log-C was picture perfect. cant wait to see the Color Corrected version. But interesting Tests thank you!.

  • @beatlemarmot Very true. I've seen comparison images between Red M-X vs Arri ALEXA and to me, the ALEXA wins by a mile.

  • @trettea You're right. This is the same principle often used in scanning film negatives-- obtaining a digital original that contains as much info as possible so you can play with the blacks in post.
