Landing in Atlanta Idaho

on my last hike, a friend flew me to the backcountry airstrip near Atlanta, Idaho. The first view looking down is the south fork of the Boise River. As we get closer, it doesn't look like there is anywhere to land. Then the valley opens up and the town of Atlanta can be seen. There are two airstrips that are perpendicular. The airstrip that we land on faces north and south. The pilot does a big Figure 8 to approach the runway. We fly toward Greylock Mountain, then turn around and fly roughly parallel to the runway before turning in for landing. The whining sound in the cockpit is the stall horn right before the wheels touch down.

wow man this is really cool i go here every year, did you get to hike Greylock Mountain?

starting from the Power Plant Campground, the trail along the river follows the contour of Greylock Mountain around to the north. so, no, I didn't hike up the mountain, but around it.

I'll be in A. again next week (by car), but would like to fly it eventually (am not even current right now) - would it be possible to get in contact with your friend to get some hints or maybe even some mountain flying lessons?

That was a sweet approach. Your friend clearly knows what he is doing. I flew in once in my 182 - it's not an easy strip! Once you're on final there's no room for a go-around. If you can't get it right the first time, don't try it! Worth the effort, though. Very historic town, great hot springs.
