After some experimenting at school we made a successful working coilgun with speeds up to 85 km/h, now this project is to make it more compact so you will be able to carry it around. Also more power and more speed!

The nozzle velocity is still very slow compared to a paintball marker or any other rifle, but the weight of the bullet makes sure it will still give quite a punch. (A paintball @ 300fps still only packs 15Joule)

It's still a hobby project and not perfected in any other way than the looks:)

specs:

Fully semi-automatic, up to 14 shots.
Capable of delivering over 18J kinetic energy, and speeds up to 110km/h! (42 gram projectiles).
Its a single stage gun, using a 8800uF(4×2200) capacitor bank with max 400v (704J).
Max shot efficiency is 2.8% but reaches almost 4% at lower voltages.

Charge time for 300v (12J kinetic energy 396J capacitor bank) is 8 seconds for the mains connection,
and when using the internal batteries about 90 seconds. It also has a Digital voltage display.

Coil overheat after 14 shots at 300v.
Total weight: 5 kilogram.
Total spend: ~~ 100 Euro
Construction time: ~~40 Hrs

Used camera: Exilim EX-FH20 (bad audio good video)

  • hey the methoed you used to mesure the velocity is very interesting.. could u explain how to get the numbers from the high speel film shot? thankx

  • @coilsinamotor The camera tapes with 1000 frames per second. The black and white stripes are 10cm wide, and the total board is 100cm. With the camera I stepped through the video and counted the frames. Then I calculated the speed with the formule: Speed [m/s] = ( distance [m] / frames it takes to cross that distance [x] ) * frames per second of the camera[x].

  • If the internal battery pack is good for one magazine, why not integrate the batteries into the magazine itself. That way if you don't have an outlet to plug into, you still have power for every magazine you have. Just a small idea.

  • This comment might get a low rating, but I would like to see a rifle version of that one!

  • @TeslaCommander Have you considered or tried using smaller projectiles? I don't know how the final velocity scales with coil guns, but it seems as though using something more traditional like a 9mm cartridge would give better penetrating power, as well as more distance.

  • @999ADAMANT999 Yeah, because this is a real battlefield weapon, and not a hobby in some guys garage.

  • WOW GLOWING gun with 100w light bulb, You will be easy target on battle field...

    HELLO HELLO I AM HERE!!!

  • electricity=not efficent

    gas=economic

    fission=efficent

    fusion=very efficent

  • Yep, if you`ll mаke а bigger one, аnd mаke nаils аs bullets, this `ll becime reаl weаpon

  • zomg wtf h4x?! 109 km/h?! And it shot rigth thru PLEXY-GLASS?! That is one powerful toy! :O

    I WANT ONE!~ xD

  • can you do that with an 150mm tank projectile?

  • @saultube44 I do believe he didn't create that coil gun to hurt anybody or any living being for that matter. just for the science and fun of it. if i had a nuclear bomb, or created it, id set it of in space or anywhere where it would cause no harm, JUST for the fun of

  • @Saultube44 you never know what developing coilgun technology could come to, although you do have a point, can you think of anything practical for capacitors of that size though?

  • Why not create something useful instead of investing so much creativity and resources to destroy something or hurt some one? Is amazing how humans find creative ways to do stupid things.
