Allied Waste Services is implementing a system for food waste composting. Four businesses in Salem, Oregon, have signed-up to participate in the pilot program. Living Culture talks with Debra Edwards and Stephen Perkins of Cascade Baking Company, and Chrissie Bertsch of the Salem Conference Center, to observe the program first-hand. We then visit Allied Waste's Processing & Recovery Center, north of Corvallis, to discuss the composting process with Brian May and Robin Murbach. Once complete, the finished compost will be used for gardens and potting soil.

Living Culture is a monthly television series that showcases cuisine and agriculture in the Pacific Northwest. Our mission is to generate interest in local foods through inspiring and positive media.
