  • On a world map it is called the East China Sea. But on Korean maps it is the South Sea. So let's call it the South Korea Sea. Fair enough. I love Korea. Sorry to offend any Koreans.

  • But the family had to eat to survive and so the women (it's always the wife that holds family) have to go out to get food. They started diving to get plentiful seafood. That's why the women diver tradition started in Korea.

  • The origin of women divers in Jeju, Korea is from the Chosun Dynasty. In the past Jeju Island was considered the end of the world by Koreans. Whenever there was a purge of officials by the king of Chosun dynasty, the unlucky (and lucky enough to avoid execution) govt officials were shipped off to the Jeju Island. Most never to return. The thing is that the officials were Confucian scholars who view manual work as contemptuous activity. They will read and write but not work with hands.
