Tsunami hits Ventura Harbor California

Tsunami hitting Ventura harbor on 2/27/2010 following the 8.8 Earthquake in Chile. See the surge of the tsunami as it rolled into the Ventura Harbor.

A few things that viewers may want to know about this video before you write your comment. First of all, this video was shot more than 2 hrs after the Tsunami rolled into Ventura harbor and what you are seeing is a surge that was generated by the tsunami, not a wave that many would expect. Tsunami's generally do not come ashore as a wave, they come as a surge of water.

Yes, I live on my boat so no, I did NOT go running to the water's edge with my dog, I was at home on my boat, watching the news when I saw that the wave was hitting Hawaii and noticed that we were on the same projected course. When I looked out and saw the water emptying out of the harbor (a classic definition of what happens immediately prior to a tsunami, the water rushes out to sea), I grabbed the dog and banged on every boat's hull as we ran down the dock getting my neighbors up and out of harms way and didn't look back for an instant as we all ran off the dock as quickly as we could to higher and dryer ground.

This video was then shot after we had watched the surging of the tsunami from a safe distance for more than 2 hrs and had determined that the worst had past and it was safe to go check on our homes. Only then did I pull out my iPhone and capture this video.

This surge hit at low tide, so yes we were extremely lucky. Had it hit at high tide, or if it had been any worse we would have been in serious trouble. Fortunately for myself and my fellow liveaboards, none of our homes were damaged.

For those of you who are curious as to why I say in the video that this wave came all the way from Chile and not Japan, that's because, this wave is from the Chile earthquake in 2010 and not the 2011 Japan earth quake. When i received calls in the very early morning hours that a major earthquake had hit Japan in 2011, I immediately checked the projected timeline for when the wave was expected to arrive. Doubled up my dock lines, grabbed important documents and data and headed inland for higher ground.

Are other tsunami's worse than what we got in Ventura, absolutely. Is there massive destruction and huge waves here? No. If destruction is what you're looking for, move along, nothing to see here. This is very strong surge of water that was generated more than 4,000 miles away in the Southern Hemisphere. It is simply remarkable that this much energy was transferred across the globe and still was able to produce the effects that you see here.
