    That's not entirely true. This movie gets away with models because the movements are slow and linear, and there are very few objects on screen, but a movie like Star Wars (1977 edition) shows all the limitations of models. Changes in direction look unnatural with models, and so does the lighting of dozens of models at once, and so do explosions. Those are inherent limitations of the technique, which can only be overcome with computer graphics.
