THE TG4 series on past Irish Presidents, which is entitled simply ‘Uachtaráin’ and which has been showing for the past six weeks, is fascinating, nostalgic, entertaining and insightful. ‘Uachtaráin’ is a masterpiece on many levels. For someone who has patience for little TV watching, I have found it compelling to the point of distraction from my impatience.
The office of the President of Ireland is usually regarded with a sort of distant respect, as one might regard a kindly old aunt, who is venerable and sweet but past being taken seriously. Until Mary Robinson’s inauguration, the presidency was viewed as a retirement home for once-active, perhaps even fiery, politicians, who had earned the kind of distinguished career-conclusion that the position offered.

One of the greatest presidents Ireland has ever had. Her successor will indeed have such intense pressure to live up to the standards she exemplified. Ireland is a better country because of President McAleese.
