My Inaugural Professorial Lecture, October 18th 2011, Hunter Council Chamber, Victoria University of Wellington. Includes performance of Kartsigar (1st movement) by the New Zealand String Quartet.
THE ROAD TO KARTSIGAR Returning to Eden? Stealing From The Gods? Or Musical Tourism? In his inaugural lecture, Professor Psathas traces the genesis of his work Kartsigar, written for the New Zealand String Quartet. Exploring the music of ancient Greece, modern and ancient approaches, as well as his work with living practitioners of age-old musical traditions, Professor Psathas will illustrate how the translation of musical paradigms from the Near and Middle East into music for Western European classical ensembles can yield unique 21st century works.
