News Update: United Airlines Parent, UAL Corp, Closer to Merger with Continental Airlines, Inc.

UAL Corp. (NASDAQ:UAUA), parent to United Airlines, said Wednesday that a merger valuation with Continental Airlines, Inc. (NYSE:CAL) is drawing to a close, and the deal could be made as early as next week.

Continental Airlines held a board meeting today to discuss the potential merger, and will hold another meeting next Friday.

The meetings point to signs that the two airline companies remain optimistic, despite differences over swap-stock transition and share-price ratio.

UAL Corp. and Continental Airlines have discussed the deal for the past two weeks.

A potential merger would make the "world's largest airline by traffic," according to the Wall Street Journal.

UAL Corp. is trading up 6.44% at $21.83.

I'm just wondering why airlines are opting to merge with other airlines nowadays? I'm a bit sad to see Continental and Northwest merging with UA and Delta. Their airline personality is very unique. Sorry, I am a big fan of NW.
