The most peaceful countries are Atheist. But many countries are Christian, Muslim, Jewish..etc.. and are peaceful. Has nothing to do with religion. It's just corruption because of the environment itself. Plus, Uzbekistan was part of the Soviet Union since 1924, until the collapse in 1991. It was already going through some stuff, Islam or not.

@oldstock1607 "President" Islom Karimov has been in office since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and considers Uzbekistan to be a secular state. The way he and his government lackies have been treating fellow Uzbeks who speak Arabic in either public or inside religious institutions is outrageous. It's a remnant of policy once practiced by the Bolsheviks.

Besides, Turkic peoples are known for their moderate belief in Islam. It's embedded in their tribal culture to respect women.

Some of the comments here are just plain paranoid, fearful and immature. If you think Islam has done nothing but damage in the history of the Uzbek people, you're in over your head. What erected the cupol-like monuments with their pristine, sky-like patterns in Khiva, Bokhara and Samarqand? Nearly all Muslim rulers in the history of the country haven't interfered in peoples' individual pursuits for wealth and personal excellence like the Bolsheviks.
