sometimes, you just gotta take a moment
to think about where you are, and remember how you got here..

look, life is really hard, it's true, you all know it,
but no matter how hard it may be, you don't show it
'cause nobody wants to share their problems or worries,
nobody really listens when you tell your stories

and so you keep 'em inside, do what you can to try to hide
the pain and suffering that occurs throughout your life
hoping one day you'll find someone whom which you can confide
the secrets inside you no longer wish to hide

and as you struggle through the pain, you think you'd go insane
you feel like you're alone with no umbrella in the rain
but you don't realize that everyone one else feels the same
we're all in this together, we're riding the same train

we all know what it's like, the fear of causing disappointment
to mom, dad, aunts, uncles, and grandparents
their expectations are like a load on your shoulders
the weight of that load gets heavier as you grow older

lil sis and baby bro look up to you 'cause you're the oldest
"ge ge", they're calling you even when you don't notice
that they need you to be a role model, so set examples
don't lie, cheat, steal, don't smoke, don't even gamble

responsibility can be real hard to learn
a duty or obligation is the meaning of the term
but it ain't easy to grasp like 1, 2, 3's or A, B, C's
or songs you were taught to sing in elementary... school

but when the spotlight shines on me
i know you'll finally see the better part of me
'cause when the music sets me free
it's then, when i believe that i can do anything

while attending school in san diego, it seemed so hard to be able
to let a single day go by without asking why
no matter how hard you try, you wanna give up and cry
you wanna jump off the roof, see if you're able to fly

but wait! that's suicide, you can't do that
you can't just quit the game of life before you'e had a chance to bat
hold on, have some faith, hope will get you on your way
hope is all you have and its gonna save your ass today

step by step, take it slowly, go day by day
take notes in class, pass exams, strive for the A
achieve success, don't regress, this is a test
of your will, determination to prove you're better than the rest

growing up, every child needed to have a dream
no matter how impossible the dream appears to seem
a doctor or lawyer, whatever you wish to be
just keep working, one day eventually you will be

mama and papa, they both have worked so very hard
to provide the best environment, they got you this far
came all the way from Southeast Asia
brought you to the land we call "America"

opportunities around every corner
but life is never easy especially on the foreigners
your old man washed dishes, kept them clean
while mom stayed home working the sewing machine

but you aints gotta worry about none of that now
it's all been taken cared of and it's in the past now
what you gotta do is just get your education
get a degree, find a job with paid vacations

then one day you'll look back while chilling in your house
with your white picket fence, you'll be sitting on the couch
with your kids all quiet and listening
as you tell your family's story of the American Dream

'cause when the spotlight shines on me
i know you'll finally see the better part of me
'cause when the music sets me free
it's then, when i believe that i can do anything
