I hate that area where the floor just spins. It's a cool idea I guess, but in my opinion, it's about as disorienting as the dream world tower with the walls that disappear, so I don't understand why you think it's so cool while at the same time you dislike the disappearing walls part.

Anyways, in my personal experience, the direction you face after spin is always your original direction, so you can use the direction you are facing as your "benchmark," as you called it...

That glass pathway at the beginning reminds me of Rainbow Road. It looks so bus
