A common mistake in management today is to confuse creativity and innovation. There are three necessary but not sufficient conditions for innovation starvation, pressure and perspective shift. This idea is illustrated in this video using the story of Apollo 13. Details of Dave's regular one-day seminars entitled "The Cynefin Seminar" can be found here http://cognitive-edge.com/cynefin-seminar.php .

"Starvation, pressure and perspective shift" are "necessary" conditions for innovation. Do you really think this was true for Edison, Brunel, Newton etc ???
I think the necessary conditions of Creativity/Insight and Persistence have a lot more truth.

I find Cynefin interesting but this is really poor.
"Creativity is as symptom of innovation" - Not by any normal definition of the terms, it doesn't even make sense!
"pressure of time, lack of resources and perspective shift and that creates innovation" - does it?
"if you asked them to come up with a solution in any other circumstances they would have never produced it" - Really? How do you know? They might have come up with something better.
Very bold statements, id like to see the research

I'm not sure who actually says it in the actual mission, but in the movie it was Kevin Bacon as Jack Swigert who says the line (this is kind of paraphrased):
Houston: OK, we need you to rip the cover off.
Lovell: He wants you to rip the cover off the flight plan.
Swigert: With pleasure.
That's from the movie, anyway. I'm not sure if it was in the mission.
