A visit back to the one of the most beautifull rural lines in the West Country. The South Devon Railway hosted its 'Rails and Ales' gala, a popular event with a intense timetable and plenty of ales for the gents! This was to be the first time for me to do lineside shots, I managed to get a linesiders permit to film on the line.
With sunny spells, locomotives and coaching stock in their correct liveries, making the very authentic GWR/BR look of the line, you would be spoilt with options on were to go!

The locos in this film:

GWR 4500 Small Prairie 4566 from the Severn Valley Railway, visiting the SDR for the first time ideally suiting the line. Hauling the GWR chocolate and cream stock

GWR 5700 No. 5786 in BR black livery, hauling the BR MK I blood and custard stock. giving a mid to late 1950s scene to the line. Also hauling the demonstration goods service to Staverton at the end of the film.

GWR 4575 No. 5526 hauling the auto train services between Buckfastleigh to Staverton, another timeless 1950's service.

The SDR is now closer to me now than before, being just a 20 minute drive from home. Its full of options and locations.
Please note: All lineside shots were taken by permission of the SDR as I have a linesiders permit.

  • Another masterpiece Rys, superb camera work and captured images...talking of your external mic, there is evidence of a slight buzz in the right hand channel, a bracket fixed under the camera and holding the mic away will probably do the trick...5* Bob

  • Ahh yeah I had recently bought the external mic and have been trying it out the past month, I'l try and see if I can find an extension cable or a bracket.

  • Lovely Ryan, Pannier and Prairies, my favourites. Nice action of being sprayed by 5526 lol. SDR is lovely, just like the PDSR a few miles away, Churston has to be their best station. 5*s

  • Theres your bonus Josh! I was not expecting the prairie to blast out like that, was concerned the lenses would get water droplets but thankfully didn't!

  • Excellent, entertaining compilation; well crafted! 5* Do you use an external Mic?

    - Mike

  • Yep, a stereo mic. Might considder getting an extension cable so that it can be placed on the floor.
