Carinotetraodon travancoricus,

Originating from the inland waters of India (Kerala), Dwarf Puffers (a.k.a. "Malabar Puffers", "Dwarf Indian Puffers", "BB Puffer", "Pygmy Puffers", "Sea Frogs", "Blue-Eyed Puffers", "Bumblebee Puffers", "Pea Puffers", or "Abeni Puffers") were first seen around the mid 1990s in Europe. It wasn't until the late 1990s that they were seen more often and were available in the United States. Recently they have gained enormous popularity due to local fish stores and large chain stores like Petsmart keeping them in stock (though it seems that most Petsmart locations have stopped carrying them).

Their relatively low pricing ($2.00-$5.00 U.S.) and the fact that they can be kept in smaller aquariums have definitely contributed to their popularity, with Dwarf Puffers now accounting for the majority of new pufferfish purchased by hobbyists.

  • The recommend snail size is VERY small, about the size of the puffers eye. To get snails that small you pretty much have to grow them in a separate tank. Use a piece of cucumber to attract the baby snails. Be-careful, not to overfeed them.

  • Hi, I have 4 of these puffers. I have had them for about 1 month. I am feeding them on blood worms, guppy fry and brine shrimp, Can I feed them garden snails ? Or only water snails how long will they live for. What do you feed yours and how big is your tank ?

  • Brine shrimp are good but don't wear down the teeth. Need to feed water snails from time to time.

  • They can but it is very stressful and can injure them.

  • i live in california where can i get this type of dwarf puffer. thanks

  • cool video! im getting two this week a female and a male! is it okay to feed them snails once every two weeks?

  • oh my god get off the snail kick! they dont even crunch through the shells! they suck out the soft body of the snail. if you want to wear their beaks down, live them a fresh mussel shell with a tiny bit of meat on it.

  • also, brine shrimp have very little nutritional value so they should only be fed as a treat.

  • they don't NEED snails. It is not very common for them to have their beaks get overgrown. sometimes it is easier to crush bigger snails for them to eat. mine are eating mainly live blackworms. i wouldnt feed them guppy fry or anything from outside because anything fromt he wild has a chance of introducing parasites.
