it would be priceless if the gear retracts, but then that's too much to ask in such a compact package.

No, it really wasn't windy or you could not fly such a light aircraft without a ball of flames. Also, the landing gear does retract but this was the maiden voyage and they didn't want to risk it. The whole plane is probably worth $100k +, so the owner is obviously careful!
