Another attempt at playing this beast of a piece, with a more aggressive approach. A few very dodgy moments! From public recital, Nov 2006.

  • A devilish mixture of Ringeissen and Hamelin! Both styles of performance are dominating, but slow parts compsrise something unique yours.

I didn't understand what happened at 1:43 - 1:53... That was very sad.

The fastest parts (with 64ths) also deprived me of some pleasure...

7:42 - Chemin de Fer style!

I love your aggressive approach. When it's better to slow down, you speed up to skip that difficulty as fast as possible.

Why did you cut the applause in the end? It must be roar of excitement!

  • @f1f1s I look back on this now and think I was very brave but probably not very clever ;) I took a lot of chances in the performance and not all of it worked. I like the end best. It's wrong to speed up that much but it's exciting! I'd like to return to this piece one day, I love Alkan but it's hellishly difficult.

  • Consider practising with a metronome so that the tempo is dead steady and unvarying from the theme to the end. Yes, even the variations 17 and 18.

  • Yes, you're correct. Sometimes adrenalin can be an issue too, especially in music of this difficulty. Variations 17 and 18 are a bete noire of mine. I get uneasy just thinking about them :) Very much enjoyed your Van Cliburn Alkan btw, congrats.

  • Most of the dodgy moments are probably just caused by the hands tensing up due to the pressure of performing in front of an audience with the event being recorded - I expect many of those mistakes don't happen when you practise at home. Where did the performance take place?

  • It was from a concert last year, given at Dundee University.

  • Aesop would be proud to hear that this is what has become of his feast.

  • Tempo is a bit wrong sometimes. Bat it's still a great perfomance.

  • Almost as good as the celebrated Cindy Elizondo, (tho just a little less life-changing), the title here should be "Aeslop's Feet..".........or "Not AllKan play Alkan."

  • Why on earth to play from notes :D this piece is so difficult that it's much easier to play without.
