Itchy bites off a huge task, as he designs and builds a porch roof over the old deck.

  • Good idea to put the extra layer of wood for the roofing nails not to show through, i got extra thick plywood for my deck roof project. Do you think the underside needs to be protected by either staining or vinyl ? I haven't done either yet.

  • I'm no expert here... just a do-it-yourselfer. I'd say that stain may keep the wood preserved a little bit and keep the bugs out.

  • what did you put on the top of your boards ?

  • On the roof? I used 6" barn siding so it looks good from the bottom view, then I put half inch OSB sheeting on top of that. That gives the roof a little thickness so the roofing nails don't come through.
