Celia told Noel Coward that she didn't want to play the role because she was too old. Thanks to Noel for convincing her she was wrong. In fact, that Johnson is no youngster, yet beautiful, is absolutely fitting for the film.

When Celia is out walking at night trying to get things straight in her mind a bobby suspects her of prostitution. The moral triumph in the end is fine, but it's a desperately unhappy movie, with its visions of a "high romance" fading, fading, gone.

One insomniac night I saw this movie and was blown away. I never knew the title because I caught it a bit after the initial scenes were shown. It wasn't until I watched the History Boys, where they re-enacted the ending scene that I found out it was Brief Encounters. It was too memorable to forget. *sigh they don't make movies like they use to.

One of my favourite film, seen again and again. Tellement romantique!!! and at the same time so desperately sad... and this music oh so Sublime Rachmaninov "takes my breath away" as put Chris de Burgh in his famous song "Lady in red"....

Yes I agree it's terrible that people cannot be sincere to each other, but I also would like you to know that it's people like you that make sure that others can never be happy they judge others, what's it to you if one commits adultery or not? Live your life and mind your business

This is my most favorite movie in B/W & I was born 21yrs after it's release . ABSOLUTELY DIVINELY ROMANTICALLY BEAUTIFUL <3 Couldn't agree more with comments by : knausspiano & : 23 brookside .

But what a terrible remake with Sophia Loren & Richard Burton . You should Never tamper with the original . I wish I was born in the era oh the sweet , bitter love , one can't have <3

Try "The Passionate Friends" with Claude Rains. He's delightful!
