The Music Never Dies

THE MUSIC NEVER DIES is an intimate portrait of elderly jazz musicians who have given us the most universal music of our time. Through their words and music, through archives, in their homes and in concert, we follow along to bring you up close and personal with their remarkable voices and talents. Mostly forgotten now in a music industry driven by profit and celebrity, these musicians still play while and wherever they can, sometimes helped by a small group of concerned individuals through the Jazz Foundation of America. The film will take us inside the JFA and show us their efforts on behalf of the musicians and their music.

We will journey to two focal points where this music was born and nurtured: Harlem and New Orleans. Both these places are presently experiencing major changes that will ultimately erase much of this music history. New Yorks hot real-estate market is pushing Harlem to undergo massive rezoning and gentrification. While in New Orleans, rebuilding is going on after the tragedy of jHurricane Katrina wiped out many musicians homes and concert venues. With the musicians as our guides, we will explore these locations that inspired so much of this music.

As we see them playing, and hear their stories, we grasp the backdrop of the 20th-century, the trials and tribulations they endured that both nurtured and exploited them. But ultimately this film is about the music, a celebration of these musicians, their wisdom and their genius, as they continue to grace us with THE MUSIC NEVER DIES.
