Marciano defends his HW championship of the world against the former Heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles. This is the only fight of Marciano's title defense that is not filmed in its entirety, instead there are 5 filmed rounds which I cut about to make this highlight (Round 1, 4, 6, 10, and 15). Coincidentally, this is the only defense of Marciano's title that goes the 15 round limit. The fight goes with Charles out-boxing Marciano in the earlier rounds and picking up points. Marciano surges in the second half of the fight to take the fight. Marciano won the fight by unanimous decision (8-6-1, 8-5-2, 9-5-1 were the scorecards).

There's a crackling sounds for the first minute or so that fortunately subsides.

Arthur Daley (Of the New York Times) wrote, "A brave and gallant man is Ezzard Charles. He didn't have to take the punishment he did from the 6th round on. He could've taken the easy way out. No finger of scorn would've been pointed at him if he had gone down and ended it. Critics have accused of him in the past of making prudence his cardinal virtue, but Charles fought to the finish on his feet rather on his shield."

Whitney Martin raved about Marciano's "unswerving determination and confidence," and "a body conditioning to withstand anything for an endless period of time."

Wendell Smith said on Charles stand, " gallant, heroic, violent bid... Here was a man who lost the battle but won the respect of everyone... Here was a man with great dignity, courage, and unrivaled spiritual and mental strength."

Rocky Marciano later said, "I learned about pain in my fights against Ezzard Charles."

  • CONT'D: The Brockton Blockbuster truely embodies his greatness with one single display: AT 8:25 OF THIS VIDEO, SECONDS from the completion of the fight, Rocky Marciano lands his dreaded OVERHAND right with full force. No boxer alive or dead ever possessed the fitness to accomplish this feat.

  • That was one goddamn brutal ass fuckin fight, man. They don't make boxers like that anymore. Charles was the only man to last 15 rounds with Marciano. I don't know what in the hell was keeping him up. Talk about a steel chin.

  • BOTH ARE TOUGH

  • @jennifer8970 you know how to count?

  • BOTH HAVE CHINS OF STEEEEL!

  • Charles won this fight.

  • Charles was a real opponent for marciano to really shine. he was probally the hardest fighter marciano ever faced. He need more real opponents like Jersey Joe Wallcott, Joe Louis and Archie Moore to really show off his right hand.

  • The picture is distorted--stretched sideways making everything wider than it was..

  • ANOUNCER:the negro is putting up quite a fight!

    :)

  • LMAO when charles was hitting rocky the announcer did not say anything but he keep saying rocky last name lmfao racist

  • i miss the clash of the heavyweights i wish it would come back and be BIGGER THAN EVER!

  • Two great fighters. Even though Ezzard Charles was a little old, he was still very much great, but the young Rock was just a little greater.

    Cool vid!
