  • Beautifully done! Soulful sound. What do you know of the composer and how this tune came to be?

  • Sammy Lind, my old time fiddle teacher at camp in the summer told us but is fiddling with something and I missed the story. If you know, do tell. All I know is Ernie Carpenter composed it. I don't do it justice but I do really enjoy playing it.

  • @kitsilanogal Good job, how long have you been playing?

  • @shal0mnurh0me

I have been playing now June 2010 since Jan 2008. I wish I started earlier, but, it is enjoyable. I am a rank beginner...so, it is played much better by the players on utube. Thanks for your encouragement. kitsilanogal

  • @Mandolin1944 No problem. There's a few people that play that song here on youtube and a few of them tell the story of what happened, so I just learned it from watching all of the elk river blues videos. It would be interesting to here it on mandolin, I actually just learned it on banjo last night, I might post it today. Check out ottlakerambler on youtube, he also has a fiddle version similar to kitsilanogal's of Elk River Blues. Looking forward to hearin' it on mandolin!

  • @shal0mnurh0me Thanks a lot! I'm glad I asked 'cause that's a story worth knowing! You had to know was something like considering that sound. How did you know that? Think I might learn that tune for my channel.

  • @Mandolin1944 Ernie Carpenter grew up on the Elk River in West Virginia and his family had lived there since the late 1700's. They flooded the river and it took away his home and all of the land that his family had lived on for generations. He built a new house after his old one was destroyed and he wrote this song while sitting on his new front porch.

  • Beautiful version! Thanks for sharing.
