@doughesson nonsense - the SM2 payload was an expanding rod type meant to tear holes in thin skinned aircraft. At most it could have caused some superficial damage to the more delicate structures topside, but it could hardly 'take out' a ship.

@LaRangerDave My brother in law topped out as a Master Chief GSE & O'Bannon was one of his ships.

@Videowatcher198 SM2s are dual purpose. My ship USS Mahan DDG 42 was the first in the Fleet to be equipped with SM-2s.I was told during ESWS lectures that as long as the terminal guidnace system could paint it,the target didn't matter.Air or surface,a Terrier could take it out.

Was on the Obannon 91 to 94, and sad to see so much excitement in sinking it, but understand the young ones, they will realize someday what it means. Just wish they could respect the people that were on that boat, sad to see her go!!

@Videowatcher198 Maybe just getting their attention?

Was on the O'Bannon 88-91.. Sad to see her go.. The excitement on deck on the DDG was a little much. A little respect to those that had gone before would have been nice. But I understand...

the OB was my first ship. kinda hard to see her getting blew up.
A harpoon missile would've been a better weapon of choice seeing how it is a anti ship missile and the sm2 is pretty much surface to air.

@Videowatcher198 true statement, but they dont put harpoons on any of the new DDG's. its a discontinued weapon system as they are work on another form of harpoon.

REALLY dumb watching that operation from topside. Had the forward missile failed to fire, the aft launcher would have been commanded to launch...normally. If they only had the forward launcher selected...then ok...but it's still unsafe. Anything can happen when you are playing around with ordnance.

@lwilde yes, only the fwd launcher was set to authorize magazine for AWS
