In November 2009 more than 70 teams gathered at Tsukuba in Japan for the Real World Robot Challenge.

This contest required a robot to navigate, completely autonomously, around a course it had not previously encountered.

The route for the final was over a 1Km distance through a park and town streets.

On the way, they encountered all the obstacles you and I would find, including a small lake, trees, bicycles and pedestrians.
