It's been a year since "The Missing Stars" hack was released and until now no other "complete" hack of Mario 64 has been released. You can't imagine how hard/time consuming was to make this hack with the tools I had at hand. Still, it was very rewarding.

Nowadays one could easily do a mod without much technical knowledge thanks to Toad's Tool 64 and my Mario 64 Level Importer tool released earlier this year, which gives unprecedent control over the ROM (mostly from what I learned from doing this hack) and does all the dirty hacking tasks for you.

In this video, I will show some of the early development of "The Missing Stars" and share some insigths about it.

Sorry for my terrible (actually, non-existent) video editing skills.

  • now that is more easier to make custom levels and mods are you planing to release a new version of the missing stars or you are up to in something difrent

  • @internetakias1 I won't work again on "The Missing Stars". I don't have much time nowadays, so my focus will be more on hacking tools, such as the level and music importers.

  • Interesting history on the most famous SM64 hack. Looks like it was the hardest thing you had to do in your "programming life".

  • @MasterMarioWii Working on the level importer and on the upcoming music importer has been more complicated, but the Missing Stars was more time consuming.

  • Hey Frauber, if I wanted to learn how to do complex Hex editing (like the creation of npcs and routes for them to pace and different actions for them to perform, etc) and stuff like that (basically to make levels alive instead of a bunch of stationary objects), how long would it take to learn all that? How long did it take you, is basically what I'm asking?

  • @RDX12606 It depends on your motivation and programming knowledge. Best way to start is messing with behaviour scripts , you can get nice effects without needing too much technical knowledge.

I started almost from zero when it comes to hacking/programming, it took me about two years to have a good foundation.

  • do u know how to make own stars?

  • That Luigi is creepy.

  • Are you going to make this for a real n64/Has it been done?

  • LOL YOU SUK @ PLAYING

Just kidding, interesting video. I simply can't imagine how much work it would have took without any importing tools.

  • Oh yeah & also make that there's lots of Koopa shells that you can ride on that course.

  • frauber Can you please make a ROM patcher that replaces the Peach's secret slide course with the missing star course that looks similar to the ones on this video but with the house that looks like at 0:06 & the grass outside is pink & it just has random colored trees & bob-omb buddies & random colored Yoshi's & evil Lakitu's that are invincible & throw coins at Mario instead of Spinies every where & the sky is night time.

  • Goth Yoshi lol
