Dear virtual frank , just to confirm , Can you install a out-of-the-box unformatted hd , clone your current hd to the new , and BOOT UP from the new hd?I would like to install a SSD to a new computer that I will buy seperately .

I have identical drives C & E in my pc. E is empty. I wan to clone C to E so I can just swap data cables and boot from E.

My HD is getting kinda old now, and could die at any time. I'm going to start monthly backups. The only problem with driveimage XML is that if your OS loses it's ability to boot up, your pretty much screwed. You could build a bootable BartPE. It would probably be easier just to find one someone has built already.

haha awesome :) ok heres my question. can you use this to put your operating system onto a different computer? meaning. im planing to upgrade to a crossfire motherboard but i dont wnat to spend money buying a new OS to rebuild this computer. OH and will this work with windows 7?
how does this one sound, Frank?
1. I just bought a USB flask drive that is 8 GB.
2. I have a total of 9.6GB on my hard drive.
If I used the compression option, do you think it would reduce the size of my current hard drive space down from 9.6 GB to below 8 GB so that everything would fit onto a USB flash drive?
I'd be cloning my C Drive onto a USB flash, so that the next time my computer blows, I could just restore it using driveimageXML and an 8 GB flash.

You'd have to make sure the compression took it down below 8 gig and you'd have to run the software from a machine other than the compressed one because of the temp file space you'd need!

i backed up my files with driveimagexml onto an external hard drive, and I tried to restore them on another computer.
even though I had only used about 9 Gs of disk space , i was told that there was not enough space on the computer to perform the restore.
size of the xml restore file: 9 Gs
exernal HD: 250 Gs
HD unsuccessfully used for the restore: 80 Gs.
I was told I didn't have enough space, but i DID NOT choose the Raw Image option.
Any idea what might have happened?

Were you attempting to boot off the external hard drive? How is the external partitioned? Did you remember to make the boot partion "active"? Those would be my initial guesses :)
