Perhaps the question writer encountered 3M's "30 Years"/"1980–2010" promotional campaign. However, multiple sources, including a December 1984 People article, a December 2010 Financial Times article and the official Post-it Notes Facebook profile, indicate that the product was test-marketed in four cities in 1977, with its national roll-out following in 1980.
Unless one relies upon the technicality that the product originally was sold under the name "Press & Peel" (which would be a stretch even if the category were "brands" instead of "inventions"), it seems clear that "C" was the correct answer. Therefore, the contestants should have lost only $80,000 (not $800,000) on the question.
