This video features an intro to polyrhythms and subdivisions over four beats. Lots of fun! (And played almost correctly ... ha ha ha! The fives were a little off, as were some other sudivisions ... but who's counting?)
I played 1:4, 2:4, 3:4, 4:4, 5:4, 6:4, 7:4, 8:4, 9:4, 10:4, 11:4, 12:4, 13:4, 14:4, 15:4, and 16:4.
All one bar each (thus, entire scale is in 4/4).
The usual suspects are whole notes, half notes, half note triplets, quarter notes, quarter note triplets, eighth notes, eighth note triplets, and 16th notes.
Obviously this is tricky stuff, but it's lots of fun! Just make yourself adaptable to the math, understanding how the polyrhythms fit together, then get to work (patiently!) assembling it all. Good luck, go slow, and have fun! If it feels like a root canal, you haven't understood the math yet, that's all: do the math, then do the music.
Zappa and Steve Vai (littleblackdots.com) are the dudes to dig from here. You'll find polyrhythms within polyrhythms within polyrhythms and, yes, your head WILL explode ... (or your money back).
I'm available for lessons in the Toronto area. Here are my website and email:
