Val olifant Radza dierenpark Emmen

Not for commercial use. October 30 2011, Emmen Zoo elephant Radza was pushed in a trench by a female during a feeding presentation. Zookeepers were throwing bags of food just before the presentation. When the herd gathered close to a surrounding trench, a female elephant pushed into the group. Bull elephant Radza, standing closest to the trench, lost his balance and fell in. One of his tusks snapped during the fall, hitting a female visitor in the head. She was lightly wounded. The Zoo in Emmen was evacuated and zookeepers tried to get Radza out of the trench all evening without succes. During the next morning, Radza was able to walk out of the trench. In 2009 a female elephant fell in in the trench. She was put down due to severe injuries. After the 2009 incident, the trench was filled up with sand.

After sending Radža's daughter to the Japanese Zoo in Kobe and Radža to Emmen we in Riga have no more elephants and no news about Zuze and Radža. The last I read was that while in Emmen Radža has become father to 6 baby elephants

So, this recent accident, when the giant bull's magnificent tusk was snapped in two was not the first an elephant had fallen into the trench?

And the zoo's managment has not done anything about this trench at all, even after having to put a female to death after her tragic fall 2 years ago?

Seriously, are there any person with decent brain at this zoo? If they can't deal with keeping these giant animals SAFER, why keep so many, in such a small, dangerous place? No CITIZEN complains, either?

Anyone with some decent amount of brains knows it is a bad idea to put such a narrow, unwatered moat there.

At least put some water in the moat to prevent unexpected accidents like this.

Poor guy's lucky only one tusk of his broke; he could have died from the fall. To keep these many giant animals, TOGETHER, and NOT having contingency THINKING -- in terms of safety designs in their confined enclosures --- among the zoo supervisors, it is NOT acceptable.

Such a shame.

@sim0ify Ben je wel eens een keer in deze dierentuin geweest? Ze hebben genoeg ruimte. een camera kan nou eenmaal niet de complete vlakte in 1 keer filmen. En hier staan ze allemaal samen op een bultje om bij die andere te kijken.

Wat mooi in beeld gebracht. Je ziet zoiets echter liever niet, maar ik ben blij dat hij er geen blijvend letsel aan over heeft gehouden. Ik hoop dat ze echt iets aan die gracht doen want tenslotte duurt het nog jaren voordat er nieuwe dierentuin komt.

@marl0ess Diegene waar jij op reageert zei niet eens wat over de dierentuin en zei ook niks over een hekje. Misschien moet je voortaan even de moeite nemen om iets te lezen voordat je erop reageert? Denk zelf even na.

jemig, waarom niet gewoon direct ontruimen.. een stapje naar achteren met weet ik het hoeveel mensen er bij kan levensgevaar aflopen voor zowel dier als bezoeker!!

Of op zijn minst die deur open doen, zodat hij weer terug kan naar zijn vrouwen... Dan was hem de lelijke wond aan de slurf op zijn minst bespaard gebleven..
