@telxon04 go read the book and find out what he is really like, you think all politicians are nice people.!

@SovereignBeing Huh? Who are you talking about? This was one of the most honorable, upstanding men to have ever served this country. This man's only err was to have been a brief member of the KKK when he was a kid. He has a record of clean, honorable behavior throughout his career. That is the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. You must be insane to state such lies. His political foes would never accuse him of anything but living an honorable life.

@DowJones16WB The KKK in WV never lynched a soul. Maybe in Alabama but in WV the people were too moral to do anything but have meetings & support politicians. Byrd joined when he was 24 & only for 1 yr then dropped out. He was told that was his only chance to escape the poverty he was born in. When he realized it was not advancing him he quit. You have no idea how it feels to be born into poverty, be valedictorian, and still have no opportunities to advance one's self.

@NitesInWhiteSatin You know nothing about this man if you make those ignorant comments. Please refrain from commenting when you are unaware in the future.

@illicit2007 He was re-elected because he was chairman of the appropriations committee and steered billions to his home state. The power is held by the people and they were very smart to keep this man in office as long as they could.

@bennyh12345 By your comments, I can see that you do not know much about the late Senator Byrd. Sen. Byrd was a conservative, not a liberal. Byrd was one of the greats and worked everyday until a few weeks before he died. RIP Senator Byrd. Your people thank you for all the great opportunities you have provided us. You are and will be a legend.

@nta214 I was appalled at the ignorance that was displayed by these people. He worked hard and did more in his long lifetime than Kimmel and his audience. I was not raised like that. I was always taught to respect my elders and learn from their experience. The senator had pneumonia that day and suffered through the work day then was admitted to the hospital. This is such a disgrace.

@elKavernikola You need to learn about being a decent person and not disgracing humanity by ridiculing an elderly person just because they are a certain age. This man has done more in his lifetime than most others can claim. He was poor, but smart. A Valedictorian of his HS class. Taught himself law and passed the bar w/o even a day of college(this was before grants and financial aid existed). Show some respect for the ones that lived their lives to the fullest before you.

@lotrville2 Amen. Thank you for standing up for our great Senator. He did so much for his people. No other senator has fought for their state like Sen. Byrd. He was re-elected at 88 because we knew he would continue to get our state millions to help us compete & grow, which he did. Our state is totally within the Appalachian mountains, the only state in the US that is, & those mountains have put WV at a disadvantage. Thanks to Byrd, we've a much better chance to compete in the future.

@phanco1 If he had passed the time of effectiveness, how come the Senator continued to deliver millions of much need funding for our state? Obviously he was still effective and we, as WV citizens, would be foolish not to keep him in power as long as we could. When he took office, WV had dirt roads & only two totally paved highways. Most of the state did not have electric, water, or gas service. He provided this for us as we couldn't do it for ourselves. He kept it going for eons. RIP
Byrd was the King of Pork and a bigot. If this is what serves us in congress we really need to clean house and get rid of these pathetic idiots.

@drivingblindwv Nuts if he did. Did you know that the fine senator started and funded a local chapter of the KKK is in county? in his youth Byrd was an enthusiastic supporter of the Ku Klux Klan. In fact, when he was 24, he helped form a chapter of the noxious organization in his hometown. He was elected to the state legislature in 1946 and the House of Representatives six years later. In those early campaigns, he made sure he used the “n” word in every speech he made.
Helping black people!
