"White Witch Doctor" (1953), set in Africa and starring Susan Hayward and Robert Mitchum, featured an exotic drum-laden background score by Bernard Herrmann. A suite from this, along with music from other Herrmann films including "Citizen Kane," was recorded in 1974 by Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic. Excerpts from the "White Witch Doctor" suite are here taken from the RCA Victor CD reissue.

Thank you for this! I had the 1974 RCA album and loved the main title of this score. When my sons were little, they used to dance to it.

I love listening to this. Slightly slower pace than the original recording, but I think it works better overall. Herrmann was known for his highly original orchestration, and this score features an instrument known as the Serpent (it looks like exactly that). Not sure if it's heard in this suite, though. Have any idea where it's heard in the soundtrack?

Glad you like the excerpts. The Suite that Charles Gerhardt recorded is a bit too long for uploading here but the CD itself is still available ("The Classic Film Scores of Bernard Herrmann"). The serpent does indeed come in on the soundtrack (and in the Suite) when a nasty tarantula starts crawling around on the sleeping Susan Hayward. Gerhardt's tempo for the Main Title is much better than on the soundtrack where Herrmann seems to be rushing the music so as to fit the credits.
