  • Next to Tapiola, this is my favorite Sibelius tone poem. The eloquence & elegance of its statement are simply stunning.

  • Bravo, Paavo!

  • wow..i cried

  • I must have listened to this performance ten or fifteen times before getting around to thanking the poster for posting it. I have heard several very impressive recordings by Berglund, but this is the first I have ever seen of him at work, and it is marvelous. He is quite simply one of the few living masters of the art of conducting.

  • Beautiful.

    NOTE: Sibelius denied any reference to the poem of the same name by Runeberg, but it captures the spirit perfectly, so I quote it here: The Bard

    Time came when winter touched his locks

    And age paled his cheeks;

    And so once more he took his lyre

    And plucked sonorous chords - and died

    Rendering up his soul to the spirit from which it came...

    J.L. RUNEBERG (1804 - 77)

  • especially the coda section with very deep tam-tam stroke... spine-chilling vision of death...

  • Nicely put.

  • beautiful.  thank you.
