Students, parents, teachers, alumni and community members came out to express their support for the beleaguered William Cullen Bryant High School in Long Island City in a pep rally on March 31 inside the school's theater.
Early this winter, the school was included in the Persistently Lowest Achieving (PLA) list because it did not meet the 60 percent graduation rate standard. Bryant High School's rate was 59. percent, requiring restructuring from the New York City Department of Education and the state government in Albany.
New York City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer, an alumnus of the school, is leading the effort to keep the school open. He also thanked the school for welcoming and celebrating diversity.
