Classic single from 1958, released on the Excello label. Flip was Sugar Coated Love which is just as excellent as Lover! Audio is transfered from vinyl 45.

  • Love this song no wonder other bands like the Kinks had a go at this number. None of them hold a candle acompared with Lesters original .The lyricsare quite humerous too. Superamos31

  • @SuperAmos31 You're definitely right, it's a funny song and the original is superb.

  • This is the first example I've heard of a Blues player with Rockabilly backing.

Dale Hawkins was just the opposite - the Chess rhythm section backed him on his first album.

    Great combination on both accounts!

  • @springheadmotorshark Great observation and I like the comparison with Dale Hawkins. My guess is that it's Guitar Gable's band backing Lester up, as I know they backed him up on the previous single and they were the Excello "houseband" at the time. I think the rockabilly feel is thanks to producer Jay Miller. Check out the flip, Sugar Coated Love too.

  • THATS A WINNER !!!!!

  • Can't do anything but agree about that! Both sides are excellent.

  • @Glendoras,

Another interesting comparison would be Elvis and Chuck Berry. Elvis always gets the credit for doing an R&B

tune (That's Alright Mama) and mixing it with his Country roots, creating Rockabilly - but Chuck Berry did the same thing in reverse with Maybelline - right around the same time.

  • i met lester a couple years ago at bluesmasters at the crossroads and me and him talked he's a really great guy, gets hit on by the ladies too its great haha
