Today, nearly the entire economy of Northeast Antioquia depends on gold mining. Up to now, these mines have been worked by hand, utilizing an economic model that emphasises social distribution to the benefit of a large majority of the population. Social organisations and the local population fear that that this could change, as the Colombian Government has awarded part of this territory to La Quedada, a subsidiary of the multinational company Anglo Gold Ashanti. Northeast Antioquia is a region marred by armed conflict. In addition to withstanding combat between different armed actors, the local population has been subjected to forced confinement and economic blockades. This has entailed restrictions on their freedom of movement and access to basic goods and services crucial to survival.
