The Stones are all 'allegedly' buried at different depths, as the available raw material was of different length.

It's the tops which were important & creating a perfectly level ring of lintels was the objective.

But because the required height above ground was considerable, many were set quite shallow. This caused their eventual collapse.

There has been a great deal of excavation around most of the Stones & there are no 'surprises' to be found below ground, such as those at Rapa Nui.

I can't seem to find any info on how deep the stones were allegedly buried. I'm beginning to wonder if it's anything like Easter Island where they found out much later that the heads had bodies. What if we're only seeing the weathered tops of a much larger structure?

The bluestones would have originally been brought to the site to used as body shields of a defensive henge such as that at Avebury. It would most likely have been seafaring incomers who built the henge (the beaker people perhaps) as a defensive corral for the domestic cattle they had introduced against attacks from native tribes. As the incomers moved inland and established more cattle range, Stonehenge would have been built to process the cattle; the bluestones would have then been utilised.

SH is the Neolithic representation of a Geocentric Cosmos.

Like other long-lived monuments, it served cumulative purposes through its life, though every 'upgrade' included the life-giving attributes of Sun & the Standstill Cycles of Moon.

1st it was a fancy cemetery on Sacred Ground.

Then it was a Memorial to the Ancestors.

Finally, with the Stones, it encompassed all the above & several others.
