Spiny Boxfish/Cowfish

Two spiny boxfish and one cowfish, after being treated, in a tank recently redone and set up (thanks to Tom). At one point it looks like the spiny boxfish winks. Really cute :)

It's a burr puffer/spiny puffer. Not a boxfish. Boxfish are well... Box shaped. Duh

Common names can be misleading and are not to be taken seriously. I have heard at least 5 different common names for this particular animal. Taxonomy-wise, no, it's not a boxfish.

I'm sure some do, but this certain kind seems to get along well with them. Actually, at one point I had a small cowfish and spiny boxfish in my tank at home, and the cowfish was the one to pick on the boxfish. So it can depend.

are they dangerous fish?

No, no, not at all. If stressed, the cowfish can release toxins that can kill other fish...but otherwise they are not dangerous. You can get hurt if you put your finger in the tank and they mistake it for food and bite you...or if you grab one while it's puffed up. But those aren't very smart things to do.
