AUGUSTA, Maine -- The Augusta roundabouts are two of the state's most dangerous intersections. The Cony circle east-side rotary is being refurbished to make it safer. It had 82 crashes and 22 injuries last year. The Memorial Circle on the west side of the city is slightly safer, but it still intimidates motorists who aren't experienced in roundabout driving tactics. This video was shot with a flip cam mounted on the dashboard of my pickup truck. It was 4 minutes of original footage compressed into 47 seconds by use of the speed up/slow down video effects filter in iMovie.

  • I've seen plenty of lousy drivers in Britain as well, pal. London is filled with moronic motorists.

  • You brits know your roundabout. It's not as dangerous as some I reckon, but in Maine, these roundabouts see statistically more accidents than just about any intersection in the state.

  • Whether the location is dangerous or not, it depends on who drives throughout it.

If a two-lane roundabout is dangerous, talk about a 4-lane roundabout with a couple of spots where the incoming traffic has the main-way priority.

The intersection controlled by the traffic lights gets dangerous when the traffic light gets out of order or stops working.

  • This isn't the UK. This is America, where idiot drivers are galore.

  • "Most corrupt city in Maine" see the video

  • so where is the dangerous bit? i live in uk by the way.

  • come to the UK... roundabouts are everywhere

  • I've lived in augusta maine for like 13 years and one thing i've learn about it no matter how much they try to change it for the better it never changes and i agree with you mingalls they really really should make a 4 way intersection way much better.

  • i think they should have just made a 4-way intersection..

  • Still can't understand why people have such difficulties with the rotaries. Yield to traffic in the circle. It's a pretty near universal rule! And follow the lane markings. You know, right lane is for right turn or straight-ahead. Many imbeciles think they can go left from the right lane.
