The Merchant of Venice(1974) directed by Jonathan Miller ( National Theatre) and John Sichel (TV version). Original airdate: 10 February 1974.

Jonathan Miller brings Shakespeare's tale of debt, love and retribution to life in this 1973 TV adaptation. Laurence Olivier stars as the money-lending Shylock. Widely regarded as the most convincing screen adaptation of The Merchant of Venice to date, this ATV production was sourced from Jonathan Miller's acclaimed 1970 National Theatre staging.
Aside from its artistic merit, it's also a valuable historical record, preserving Laurence Olivier's farewell to stage Shakespeare (though he would record King Lear in 1983).
As that detail implies, Miller has updated the action to the late 19th century,

Cast:
Laurence Olivier (Shylock);
Joan Plowright (Portia);
Jeremy Brett (Bassanio);
Michael Jayston (Gratiano);
Anthony Nicholls (Antonio);
Anna Carteret (Nerissa);
Louise Purnell (Jessica)

  • Love it

  • MrConradian. Thank you. This kind of upload is, in my view, the best thing about youtube: sharing a common heritage of art and beauty that is hard to find in the stores and shouldn't be bought. Shakespeare, and these semi-lost productions, now come again to light and the eyes of millions, are our common heritage and balm. Thank you thank you thank you.

  • this shit is interesting man !!!!!!

  • The whole scene with Jessica's flight with Lorenzo was cut from this adaptation. That is a shame, since the romance between her and her lover is slighted by the omission and doesn't make sense. Why should she choose Lorenzo over a Jewish boy if we don't see any sign of affection between them? I don't blame you since it was a choice made by the director.
