Hundreds of scratch-off lottery tickets, possibly worth thousands of dollars, were stolen out of a Fed Ex trailer in Shawnee.
Each ticket costs $1, and the thief reportedly left with approximately $900 worth in tickets. Unfortunately for that thief, the odds of hitting a big payday are slim to none.
Sally Lundsford of the Kansas Lottery said the lottery has seen this before and that there are safeguards in place to guard against stolen tickets being redeemed. That safeguard is the barcode on each ticket.
"If someone tries to cash one here at the retailer, we are notified someone is trying to cash stolen tickets," said Lundsford.
Until the ticket is activated by the retailer, it has no value.
Shawnee police are continuing to investigate the theft.
