@kgfix11 They were called the triple nickel, but they were not the first smokejumpers. First Fire Jump was in 1940, regardless of what NCSB will tell you. (North Cascad Smokejumper base). The Nickel didn't start jumping until 1944.

did you jump with region 1 by chance?? i dream everyday about jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. i figure im about 2 years or so away from drop school. but thanks and hell yea...

The first smoke jumpers were Black men who were apart ,of the Army. They did not want Black men to be thought of as Elite. They refused them to,jump into Normandy so they made them fight Forest fires . They did this initially to fight the Japanese baoons that had incindieary devices on them

I really want to get into smokejumping when I'm older, seems hard. I have a science teacher who also teachs about Wildland Firefighting, he used to be one.
