The Rhythms of Ghana

Sharon E. Friedler, Stephen Lang Professor of Performing Arts, Director of the Dance Program, and Faculty Adviser for Off Campus Study, celebrates dance as a means of developing meaningful conversations between diverse individuals and communities. In this digital story she shares her earliest memories of dance, the influence that studying and teaching in Ghana have had on her life and the rhythms of her movements, and delights in her daughters joy upon discovering the importance of rhythms in her own life. Friedler notes that "My experiences in Ghana and elsewhere have been pivotal in helping me embrace ever-wider perceptions concerning imaginative, competent, and beautiful dancing, choreographic practices, and histories. Generally, when asked what my 'home' tradition is, I say that I happily keep my feet in several worlds."
