We're a nation of laws? Really, must be nice that the laws don't apply to those running large corporations, those involved in profiteering from the war in Iraq, our supposed elected officials. How convenient our laws work to protect those most guilty of committing crimes and yet work to enslave those individuals standing the moral high ground. Fuck this nation, fuck its laws. America's laws implicitly work to protect our politicians, not our citizenry.

You say that what the NSA did deserves debate but how can there ever be debate if it is kept secret from the American people? We deserve to know what the government is doing in our names. Whatever character flaws these people have are part of a completely different topic.

Manning, Assange, and Snowden are not heroes. Far from it. Manning should have never had that level of access due to his rank and experience - this is clear now. Assange is a creep and his motives are selfish and malice at best. Snowden is a army wash out that took it upon himself to commit espionage. Yes, what the NSA does is not right, but it is legal and it deserves debate. Most of the angry people on here do not understand the complexity and effects of their espionage.

"He broke the law." Unlike Mr. President here Manning doesn't have the benefit of being able to just change the laws when they don't suit his purpose. Murder of women, children and civilians can be justified just as invading the privacy of millions of Americans, by just changing the laws. In secret no less.

Unbelievable. Maybe Bradley Manning did break the law. I think he was justified in doing that, because of the heinous acts he was exposing. What Obama did not address here was the appalling psychological torture to which Manning was subjected. The punishment far outweighed the crime, and I'm very disappointed in Obama. I'm the stupid one for thinking once that he could've been a better President than the ones who came before him.

Yes. Blacks broke laws by protesting segregation, but US made progress. Yes slaves broke the law by escaping but US advances again. Bradley Manning broke the law today.
