Office Depot had a sale on the Microsoft Lifecam HD-5000 for $29 out the door. Took it apart and removed the lens/IR filter assembly, popped the LED off the circuit board, reassembled it and stuck it on an old eyepiece (no lens either) with some double sided tape. It gets a pretty good magnification at prime focus being such a small sensor. I used SharpCap for video capturing with manual settings. About halfway through the video I bump the exposure up for a few seconds so the camera could pick up the moons.

The telescope is a fully stock Orion Starblast 6 on the tabletop altazimuth mount similar to a small Dobsonian. I just grabbed it for a quick test of the camera. Collimation was out a little, temp was so so, Jupiter was about 35-40 degrees above the horizon, and the telescope was on a shaky plastic patio table. BUT STILL NOT BAD!!!!

  • That's great, did you use a barlow?

  • @sheepbane: No barlow was used for this video. I tried a barlow and it worked fine, but I couldn't keep Jupiter in frame very well, plus the video was very shaky at such a high magnification (especially since I had the telescope on a plastic patio table). I can probably cut a few seconds of good footage out and post it for reference.
